At this point, it's pretty much an open secret that Sprint needs to hitch its ride to LTE to stay in the wireless game. CNET caught wind of the operator's intended 4G plans ahead of its scheduled October strategy announcement -- an event at which many in the industry expect Sprint to lay out its LTE cards. According to the report, the Hesse-led network's been hard at work installing the necessary infrastructure to convert to its towers to FD-LTE, which is the same flavor of LTE as Verizon and future partner LightSquared. Using the iDEN spectrum it acquired from its Nextel purchase, Sprint reportedly plans to set up 4G shop on those radio waves, and make use of current WiMAX provider Clearwire's proposed switch to TD-LTE by incorporating chipsets in future phones that accommodate both frequencies. The network changeover, rumored to cost Sprint somewhere in the range of $4 - $5 billion, should get carried out over the next five years, laying the groundwork for a true three-way 4G race.

LOS ANGELES ? Prosecutors told jurors Tuesday that Michael Jackson was killed by the actions of his personal physician, who used a dangerous anesthetic without adequate safeguards and botched recovery efforts when he found the singer unconscious.

Defense attorneys countered that Jackson caused his own death by taking the drug propofol after his doctor left the room in a desperate attempt to overcome his chronic inability to sleep.

Nothing Dr. Conrad Murray could have done would have saved the King of Pop, defense attorney Ed Chernoff told the panel, because Jackson was desperate to regain his fame and needed rest to prepare for a series of crucial comeback concerts.

The competing versions of Jackson's death and Murray's role in it were laid out in opening statements at the physician's involuntary manslaughter trial.

Speaking for more than an hour, prosecutor David Walgren relied heavily on photos and audio recordings to make his case that Murray was an inept and reckless caretaker of Jackson.

He showed a photo of a lifeless Jackson on a hospital gurney, and played a recording of Jackson speaking to Murray while the prosecutor said he was under the influence of an unknown substance roughly six weeks before his death.

The singer's speech was heavily slurred but recognizable as the international superstar. He spoke of his hopes for the upcoming concerts.

"We have to be phenomenal," Jackson is heard telling Murray. "When people leave this show, when people leave my show, I want them to say, `I've never seen nothing like this in my life. Go. Go. I've never seen nothing like this. Go. It's amazing. He's the greatest entertainer in the world."

Murray is accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of propofol in the bedroom of the singer's rented mansion, but Chernoff said Jackson gave himself the fatal dose.

He claimed the singer swallowed several pills of the sedative lorazepam on the morning of his death and that was enough to put six people to sleep. He also said Jackson self-ingested propofol, and it killed him instantly.

Jackson did not even have a chance to close his eyes, Chernoff said.

In his opening remarks, Walgren said Murray was grossly negligent by providing Jackson propofol. The prosecutor said while working for Jackson, the doctor was shipped more than four gallons of the anesthetic, which is normally given in hospital settings.

He said Jackson trusted Murray as his physician.

"That misplaced trust in Conrad Murray cost Michael Jackson his life," Walgren said.

"He left him there, abandoned him to fend for himself," the prosecutor said later while winding down his opening remarks.

The doctor had initially requested $5 million to work for the singer for a year, but accepted the lower rate of $150,000 a month, Walgren said. His contract to be Jackson's personal physician was never signed and he was never paid.

He told jurors that Murray deceived paramedics and emergency room doctors by not telling them he had been giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid. He also called the doctor inept and said he repeatedly deviated from the standard of care by leaving the singer alone while under sedation and not immediately calling 911 when he found the singer was unconscious.

Murray never called for emergency services himself, instead waiting more than 20 minutes to have one of Jackson's bodyguards make the call.

"Basic common sense requires 911 be called immediately," Walgren said. "Basic common sense. And we know that was not done."

Chernoff told jurors it was not their job to determine whether Murray was a good doctor. He said Murray and Jackson were actually friends, and Murray was trying to wean Jackson off of propofol. Jackson, however, took a lethal dose before he died, the lawyer said.

At times during the defense attorney's opening statements, Murray appeared to be crying and wiped his eyes with a tissue.

Testimony was expected to begin later in the day, with prosecutors planning to call the pop superstar's friend and choreographer, Kenny Ortega.

A number of Jackson's family members were in the courthouse, including his father Joseph, mother Katherine, sisters LaToya and Janet, and brothers Jermaine, Randy and Tito.

LaToya Jackson carried a sunflower, Michael's favorite flower.

Murray arrived holding hands with his mother.

If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license.

U of A engineering professor Dileepan Joseph and two graduate students produced a 3-D imaging system called Virtual Reflected-Light Microscopy. The technology consists of a regular optical microscope, a light source, a platform that moves the objects being photographed and software programs that extract shape and reflectance from images and transform this digital information into a 3-D image. To see the full effect on a computer screen viewers wear simple, paper framed 3-D glasses with red and cyan coloured lenses. Viewers also control a virtual light source, which they reposition using their web browser.

The test subjects used in the development of the VRLM were drilling core samples taken from beneath the floor of the Pacific Ocean. Joseph, Ph.D candidate Adam Harrison and master's student Cindy Wong produced 3-D images of ancient protozoa or microfossils that were mixed in with the sand and rock in the core samples.

Joseph says the VRLM gives geoscientists and computer programs in development much more information than simple images. The goal is to accelerate species identification of the tiny and numerous microfossils. Such identifications are used to date the rock from which the creatures are pulled. The microfossil species digitized by the U of A's VLRM prototype were found in rock known by geologists to be 60 million years old.

Geoscientists can use that kind of strata dating information in Earth sciences research and in the search for energy resources. The U of A researchers say there are multiple industrial and academic uses for their 3-D microscope technology.

You do not need any special skills or talents. You do not need expensive photography equipment to get started.

All you need is a persistent, learn and improve. You also need a point and shoot digital camera with manual mode. You do not need expensive SLR camera to do the trick.

Step 1

Take your camera and find a nice place overlooking the whole view of the scene in which your views toImage. Make sure that this place has a clear unobstructed view of the scene with a few movements of the subject. This means that it will not move too many people in the scene, because this orientation can lead to problems if you are stitching the images (more on this in section 6).

Step 2

Turn off the grid in the viewfinder of the camera (if you use an SLR camera) or the display on the LCD screen. The activation of the grid of the camera, you can see grids runninghorizontally and vertically through the camera's viewfinder and LCD display. You can use the grid to the camera against a specific reference point in the scene (eg the horizon), then align the recorded images can not influence drastically. It helps you to evaluate the orientation of the scene, so that the orientation remains consistent throughout the series of photos that his gift for your panoramic image.

Tip: If your camera does not have the functionality of the camera grid, you can always doitself. How? Take a piece of tracing paper, you can find in your local stationery store. Step 4

Start shooting away. Take the first imagethe scene and then rotate your upper body slightly to the left or right depending on where the position of the camera. When it's all right, turn your body slightly to the left and vice versa. When turning, keep the arm to the body and the hand should try to keep the camera as still as possible. Remember, the network camera as shown in step 2. Take the second picture, to ensure that it overlaps the first photos of about 20%. Further recordings inin this way until the other end of the scene you want to reach the record.

Step 5

Preview of the pictures he had taken. Check that the correct images as you go vote on it. You can use the horizon as a template. You need not be perfect. A slight misalignment between the images is good because it will not be visible after sewing.

Step 6

Use a video editing software (I use Adobe Photoshop CS 4), which comes withCar stitching tool. Most graphics editing software that can automate the stitching, and you do not need to do it manually. For users of Adobe Photoshop CS 4, use the "Photomerge", show the images in a magical way. Once the images are stitched, trim unwanted sections.

BOULDER, Colorado (AP) ? A dog-sitter's shortcut led to criminal charges for a U.S. woman who ran a Chihuahua alongside her car at 10 to 15 mph.

The Daily Camera reports (http://goo.gl/Te7pH ) that 29-year-old Joan Renee Zalk faces animal cruelty and felony menacing charges after witnesses confronted her Friday morning for running the pup alongside her Toyota Camry.

The newspaper reports that Zalk told officers the dog, named Cooper, "goes ballistic" if it doesn't walk 3 miles (5 kilometers) a day.

Witnesses called police after seeing the leashed dog struggling to keep up with the car. Zalk reportedly said the dog was fine.

Zalk is free on bond. Cooper was uninjured and was taken to a local shelter. The dog was expected to be released to its owner, who was out of town at the time of the incident.

WASHINGTON ? The military says it is ready for the lifting Tuesday of a ban on gays serving openly, while supporters of repeal applaud the historic change as a victory for equal rights.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Monday that the military is adequately prepared for the end of the current policy, commonly known as "don't ask, don't tell," under which gays can serve as long as they don't openly acknowledge their sexual orientation and commanders are not allowed to ask.

"No one should be left with the impression that we are unprepared. We are prepared for repeal," Little said.

Last week, the Pentagon said 97 percent of the military has undergone training in the new law. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Joint Chiefs chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, and President Barack Obama have all certified that allowing openly gay service members will not undermine the effectiveness of the military or its recruiting.

Repeal will take effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT Tuesday. For weeks the military services have been accepting applications from openly gay recruits, while waiting for repeal to take effect before processing the applications.

As soon as the ban is lifted, the Defense Department will publish revised regulations to reflect the new law that will allow gays to serve openly. The revisions, such as eliminating references to banned homosexual service, are in line with policy guidance that was issued by top Pentagon officials in January, after Obama signed the legislation that did away with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

The lifting of the 18-year-old ban also will mean a halt to all pending investigations, discharges and other administrative proceedings that were begun under the Clinton-era law.

Existing standards of personal conduct, such as those pertaining to public displays of affection, will continue regardless of sexual orientation.

There also will be no immediate changes to eligibility standards for military benefits. All service members already are entitled to certain benefits and entitlements, such as designating a partner as one's life insurance beneficiary or as designated caregiver in the Wounded Warrior program.

Gay marriage is one of the thornier issues. An initial move by the Navy earlier this year to train chaplains about same-sex civil unions in states where they are legal was shelved after more than five dozen lawmakers objected. The Pentagon is reviewing the issue.

Service members who were discharged under the "don't ask, don't tell" law will be allowed to re-enlist, but their applications will not be given priority over those of any others with prior military experience who are seeking to re-enlist.

Some in Congress remain opposed to repeal, arguing that it may undermine order and discipline.

A leading advocate, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, said Monday the repeal is overdue.

"Our nation will finally close the door on a fundamental unfairness for gays and lesbians, and indeed affirm equality for all Americans," said the California Democrat.

Little said Panetta would discuss the matter at a Pentagon news conference on Tuesday. The Pentagon otherwise was taking a low-key approach to the historic day.

Gay rights groups, however, were preparing a series of celebrations.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network said repeal supporters would hold "Repeal Day" celebrations across the country Tuesday.

"Through these events taking place in every state across the country, we will pay tribute to their service and sacrifice as we look forward to this new era of military service ? an era that honors the contributions of all qualified Americans who have served and wish to serve," said Aubrey Sarvis, an Army veteran and executive director of the advocacy group.

WROCLAW, Poland ? European Union finance ministers are debating a tax on financial transactions that could raise money for the EU as well as make banks share bailout burdens with taxpayers.

But European internal markets Commissioner Michel Barnier said after a meeting Saturday "there's no consensus" on the tax, which would take a tiny fraction from a wide range of financial dealings.

The levy could could be used to support the EU or be a way for banks to repay the costs of the massive government bailouts during the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

France and Germany support the idea but Britain is opposed because London is a major financial center. The U.S. is also opposed.

Many say the tax won't work unless imposed globally.

Ice on the Arctic Ocean has melted to its second-lowest level on record, according to researchers in Colorado who track this trend. The summertime melt coincides with a dramatic warming over the past decade, and it's already affecting wildlife in the Arctic Ocean.

This year, the amount of Arctic sea ice hit its second-lowest levels since record-keeping began in 1979. The chart below shows the amount of Arctic ice, in millions of square miles, since 2007.

The Arctic ice comes and goes with the seasons; typically about half of the wintertime ice melts away by mid-September. After that low-point, the ice regrows. In 2007, the amount of ice left in September hit a dramatic low.

Mark Serreze, who heads the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado, says this year's low is not far off that 2007 record.

"What it's telling us is that the long-term decline in Arctic sea ice is continuing, and even appears to be accelerating at this point," he says.

Serreze says what's notable about this year is how different the weather was, compared with the record-low year in 2007.

"In 2007, one of the big reasons we got to a record low is because we essentially had a near-perfect weather pattern that pumped a lot of warm air into the Arctic," Serreze says.

Unusually cloud-free skies hastened the melting, and wind patterns made the ice prone to disappear. Serreze says this year's melt was nearly as bad, but without the extreme weather.

Sea ice is really in trouble. The ice is so thin now that it just can't take a hit in summer anymore.

"That's telling us that sea ice is really in trouble," he says. "The ice is so thin now that it just can't take a hit in summer anymore."

That's setting up a vicious cycle. There's no question that the Arctic Ocean will freeze up again over the fall and winter, but there's less and less really thick ice building back up year to year.

"Come next spring, we're just going to have a lot of thin ice that formed over the autumn and winter. That's the stuff that melts out easily the next summer," Serreze says. "So there's a feedback at work here, and that feedback is getting stronger with time."

Serreze says the Arctic could be ice-free in the summer by about 2030, though that is hard to predict; other scientists say it could be mid-century before that dramatic point is reached.

Why does this matter? Ice that's floating on the sea surface doesn't raise the sea level when it melts. But researchers suspect it will alter the weather that reaches us far to the south. It's already affecting Arctic wildlife.

Thousands of walruses that usually float around on sea ice and dive down to feed on the ocean floor abandoned those floes when the only ice left off the coast of Alaska was over water that was too deep.

"After the sea ice ran out, a lot of the walruses came to the shore of northwest Alaska and began hauling out there," says Chad Jay, a research ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska. He says it's harder on the walruses to feed from shore, because they have to swim farther to get back to their food supply. It's also more hazardous for them to be up on the rocks instead of on ice, he says.

"When they're hauled out in these large aggregations on the shore, if there's a disturbance or something that causes walruses to flee into the water quickly, then quickly the calves get run over and die as a result," Jay says.

He's now trying to figure out how the walruses will adapt as the sea ice continues to melt away.

It?s one thing to write about the dangers of malicious software. It?s quite another to have it take over your computer. That?s what happened to me a few weeks ago. I was at work doing a routine online search when all of a sudden my computer went nuts.

A pop-up appeared in the center of the screen ? ?Warning: Virus Invasion Detection? ? and a siren started wailing. ?Personal Shield Pro? started to scan my hard drive. At least that?s what it looked like.

Within seconds, row after row of supposedly malicious software programs started stacking up in the window: viruses, spyware, adware and worms.

Personal Shield Pro said it found 47 infections. The scan warned that because of the virus activity found, the following bad things were possible: a system crash, permanent data loss, system slowdown and Internet connection loss.

I knew the scan was bogus, that my computer had been infected with fake antivirus software (FakeAV). But I couldn?t close the program. In fact, I couldn?t do anything. This rogue software had hijacked my computer. So, I turned it off and crossed my fingers.

When I rebooted, the pop-up was still there. I was helpless and didn?t know what to do. I contacted the IT department and one of the techs ran a number of scans. It took him two hours to find all the places this malware had embedded itself in the operating system on my hard drive.

If this had been my home computer, it would have meant a costly trip to the repair shop to get my machine working again.

?Fake antivirus has probably been the most prominent online threat for the last two or three years. It has infected millions of people?s computers,? says Chester Wisniewski, a senior security advisor at Sophos, a worldwide security and data protection firm.

FakeAV is also known as ?scareware? because it?s designed to scare you to into buying useless antivirus software that you don?t really need.

What is FakeAV?

FakeAV or Fake AntiVirus, also known as Rogue AntiVirus, Rogues, or ScareWare, is a class of malware that displays false alert messages to the victim concerning threats that do not really exist. These alerts will prompt users to visit a website where they will be asked to pay for these non-existent threats to be cleaned up. The FakeAV will continue to send these annoying and intrusive alerts until a payment is made.

The scam follows a common pattern. A pop-up shows what appears to be a security scan that falsely detects dangerous or illegal files or programs. In some cases, the bogus warnings say there is porn on your computer. The malicious software may even display pornographic images on the screen. And those pop-up warnings won?t stop until your click the button that says ?register now? or ?remove all threats.?

Those who do that wind up on a site run by the cyberthieves. It says you need to buy their antivirus program ? which is fake ? to fix the security problems.

?So people pay for the program and they rescan their machine and of course it says their computer is clean,? explains Coleen Robbins, chief of online threat initiatives at the Federal Trade Commission. ?But there was never anything wrong with the computer to begin with.?

Who is behind this?
Scareware is sold by international criminal gangs. Many are located overseas with accomplices in the United States. Based on recent prosecutions, we know the losses are staggering.

In June, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it had busted a scareware gang based in Latvia that badgered victims into spending as much as $129 to buy their fake antivirus software.

The FBI and its international law enforcement partners found and seized computers and servers belonging to this gang in the Netherlands, Latvia, Germany, France, Lithuania, Sweden and the United States. The feds believe this one group scammed nearly a million people out of $72 million over a three-year period.

(While this bust may slow down the FakeAV attacks for a while, they will not go away. There?s simply too much money to be made.)

These malicious FakeAV programs can do more than extort money. They can leave nasty things behind on your hard drive.

?There have been reports that people are left with Trojans, which are pieces of spyware that grab information from your computer, which make you vulnerable to identity theft,? says Paula Selis, who runs the hi-tech unit in the Washington State Attorney General?s office. ?That?s even worse than being ripped off for a product that?s absolutely worthless.?

How to deal with a scareware attack?
Most of this malware attacks Windows-based computers. If a virus alert appears on your screen, and it?s not from a program you have installed in your computer, stop and think before you do anything. Most importantly don?t touch it. Don?t run a ?free? scan and don?t try to close the window. Shut your browser using Task Manager (control + alt + delete) or turn off the machine.

If that doesn?t work, go back to task manager and look at the list of the programs currently running. Delete the rogue one, the one that is unfamiliar from the list of running programs. Then run security scans with the software already on your machine to find where the FakeAV might have hidden.

If that doesn?t work, you need to see a professional. You might want to do that anyway.

?Any time you get something malicious on a computer and it is beyond your technological ability, you immediately need to get a professional to look at it,? advises Adam Levin, chairman of Identity Theft 911. ?You may think you?ve succeeded in removing it, but in truth it?s masking itself and mutating through your system.?

How to protect yourself from scareware swindlers
The U.S. Department of Justice advises against buying computer security products that use unsolicited ?free computer scans? to sell their products. It is also important to keep your operating system and security software up to date.

Fake antivirus products are designed to appear legitimate. They have names that sound convincing, such as Virus Protector, Virus Shield, Malware Defense, AntiSpyWarePro and WinWeb Security, just to name a few. Only install software from trusted sources.

It?s also important that you become familiar with the way the legitimate anti-virus software on your computer looks and behaves. If you know what a real warning message looks like, it should be easier to spot a phony.

IBM announced Monday that Watson will be making his commercial debut at WellPoint, a company that provides health insurance plan provider with around 34 million subscribers.

Watson?s main selling point is that he can (mostly) understand language as humans speak it by sifting through huge amounts of data in just seconds. At WellPoint, he?ll be helping pinpoint treatment strategies.

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? Vanquished Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty endorsed contender Mitt Romney on Monday, calling the former Massachusetts governor the candidate who "possesses the unique qualifications to confront our severe economic predicament."

Pawlenty, Minnesota's former governor, bypassed a home-state candidate in the process, Rep. Michele Bachmann, as well as the front-runner in national polls, Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Pawlenty left the 2012 race last month after losing to Bachmann in an Iowa GOP straw poll.

The endorsement comes as Romney finds himself chasing Perry, who leads in most surveys after only a month in the race.

Pawlenty announced his endorsement on a Fox News show and the Romney campaign rushed out a letter from Pawlenty explaining the decision.

In it, Pawlenty said Romney's business background makes him the ideal candidate to right the nation's flagging economy.

"I believe he can turn it around," Pawlenty said.

While a candidate against Romney, Pawlenty hit hard on his rival's role in crafting a Massachusetts health law, parts of which were a template for President Barack Obama's sweeping health care overhaul. Pawlenty once dubbed the Massachusetts law "Obamneycare" and said Romney would have a tough time debating Obama on the issue because of it.

On Monday, Pawlenty said on Fox that he trusts Romney would move to repeal Obama's law if elected.

Later, the two appeared together at events in North Charleston, S.C., where Romney was asked if he'd consider Pawlenty as a 2012 running mate should he win the GOP nomination.

Romney said he is far from formulating a vice presidential short list, but he heaped praise on Pawlenty as someone who "would be a good addition to any national ticket."

Pawlenty ruled himself out.

"I made it clear in an interview this morning and in recent weeks as well that I don't want to be considered," he said.

Romney said that Pawlenty will be an adviser going forward, naming him a national co-chairman of the campaign. Other members of Pawlenty's campaign team previously moved over to Romney.
