How Eclectic Golf Will Help You With Your Game Plan

An Eclectic Competition is very revealing to players, you can be left scratching your head, wondering why you can't score so well every time you play.

It also gives you a glimpse of your potential.

If you are new to Eclectic Competitions, let me give you a quick explanation, and then you'll see exactly why I think you and I can learn a lot from keeping Eclectic scores.

An Eclectic is played over several rounds; it can be any number, but usually from 3 rounds out to as many as 10. The idea over the various rounds is to score the best score you can on each hole, at the end totalling up the best score made on each hole. So if on the second round you score a birdie on the 5th hole and that is the best you score on the 5th throughout the competition, then you'll final score on the 5th will be birdie - even if you make doubles and trebles each round after the birdie - the birdie still counts as your best score on the 5th.

It's the same on all 18 holes, so after the stipulated number of rounds, your score is a combination of all the best scores you made through the competition.

So now let me explain you can see why you can learn so much from playing eclectics, it's a great lesson, one we can use to improve our overall game, and make a big dent in your handicap. If over 7 eclectic rounds you've scored all pars or better, what's to say you can't do the same on every round?

(If you've ever recorded 7 eclectic rounds then you'll have seen this level of scoring is very likely for all players.)

It's a glimpse at your potential, you are capable of scoring well on all the holes - the trouble for us is trying to do it in one round!

This technique allows you to build your round hole by hole, it's a great way to improve your scoring around your home course, and let's face it, if you play as a member of a club, you will very likely play 50 - 100 rounds a year at your home course, and most handicap adjustments are made on your home course.

Here's what you do:

Decide every round at your home club is part of your own personal Eclectic competition.

Start recording the best scores you shoot on each hole, this is where the real benefit comes in. Each time you equal or improve on your best score make notes on how you played the hole, what it was you did to helped you score well, club choice off the tee, or angle you approached the green, you left yourself an uphill putt etc?whatever you noticed helped you score well on that hole.

On the days you didn't play the hole well, learn from this too, note what caused you to drop shots.

Now, after a few rounds of your own personal eclectic, you'll stand on each tee knowing three things for certain

1. You are able to score well on that hole, you've done it before, and you've your own real experience to call on.
2. You know how you did it, you've a made your own record of what works for you on this hole.
3. You know the pitfalls to avoid, what strategy will most likely cost you strokes.

You have a game plan for each hole, a plan you can trust because you know it works!

Infections Might Raise Stroke Risk in Children: Study (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Many children who suffer a stroke had some sort of an infection in the days leading up to the stroke, a new study says.

However, childhood stroke is rare and parents shouldn't be unduly alarmed by these findings, the researchers noted.

The researchers analyzed data collected from 2.5 million children enrolled in a health plan in California between 1993 and 2007 and identified 126 cases of childhood ischemic stroke, which is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. These cases were compared with a control group of 378 children of similar age who didn't suffer a stroke.

The study found that 29 percent of the children who suffered a stroke had an infection in the two days before the stroke, compared with 1 percent of the control group children.

Thirteen percent of the children who suffered a stroke had an infection three to seven days before their stroke, compared with 2 percent of the control group children.

The increased risk of stroke did not continue after the first month of infection, according to the study slated for Wednesday presentation at the American Stroke Association meeting in New Orleans.

The children in the stroke group ranged from infants to adolescents. The average age was 10.5 years and the oldest child was 19. The researchers found no difference in stroke between girls and boys or among ethnic groups.

The researchers did find that acute infections were more likely to trigger stroke than chronic infections.

"These were predominantly minor acute infections and represented a variety of infections, including upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections and ear infections. No particular type of infection predominated," principal investigator Dr. Heather Fullerton, director of the Pediatric Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Center at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a stroke association news release.

In the United States, the incidence of stroke in children is about five per 100,000 per year, the release noted.

"Childhood infections are exceedingly common, while childhood strokes are uncommon," Fullerton said. "Parents should not be alarmed at the findings of this study. We suspect that there are rare genetic factors that may place some children at risk for this uncommon effect of common infections."

Infection is a known risk factor for ischemic stroke in adults.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Officials investigating Illinois reactor shutdown (AP)

CHICAGO ? Officials are investigating the events surrounding a power failure at a nuclear reactor in northern Illinois, but believe they may have traced the cause to a piece of equipment at a switchyard.

After the shutdown Monday morning at Exelon Nuclear's Byron Generating Station, operators began releasing steam to cool the reactor from the part of the plant where turbines produce electricity, not from within the nuclear reactor itself, officials said. The steam contains low levels of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, but federal and plant officials insisted the levels were safe for workers and the public.

Exelon Nuclear officials believe a failed piece of equipment at a switchyard at the plant about 95 miles northwest of Chicago caused the shutdown, but they were still investigating an exact cause. The switchyard is similar to a large substation that delivers power to the plant from the electrical grid and from the plant to the electrical grid.

Diesel generators were supplying the reactor with electricity, though it hasn't been generating power during the investigation into what happened. One question is why smoke was seen from an onsite station transformer, though no evidence of a fire was found when the plant's fire brigade responded, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng said.

The commission declared the incident an "unusual event," the lowest of four levels of emergency. Commission officials also said the release of tritium was expected.

Mitlyng said officials can't yet calculate how much tritium was released. They know the amounts were small because monitors around the plant didn't show increased levels of radiation, she said.

Tritium molecules are so microscopic that small amounts are able to pass from radioactive steam that originates in the reactor through tubing and into the water used to cool turbines and other equipment outside the reactor, Mitlyng said. The steam that was being released was coming from the turbine side.

Tritium is relatively short-lived and penetrates the body weakly through the air compared to other radioactive contaminants.

Releasing steam helps "take away some of that energy still being produced by nuclear reaction but that doesn't have anywhere to go now," Mitlyng said. Even though the turbine is not turning to produce electricity, she said, "you still need to cool the equipment."

Candace Humphrey, Ogle County's emergency management coordinator, said county officials were notified of the incident as soon as it happened and that public safety was never in danger.

"It was standard procedure that they would notify county officials," she said. "There is always concern. But, it never crossed my mind that there was any danger to the people of Ogle County."

Another reactor at the plant was operating normally.

In March 2008, federal officials said they were investigating a problem with electrical transformers at the plant after outside power to a unit was interrupted.

In an unrelated issue last April, the commission said it was conducting special inspections of backup water pumps at the Byron and Braidwood generating stations after the agency's inspectors raised concerns about whether the pumps would be able to cool the reactors if the normal system wasn't working. The plants' operator, Exelon Corp., initially said the pumps would work but later concluded they wouldn't.

Syrian troops push back in fight on Damascus edges (AP)

BEIRUT ? Syrian forces heavily shelled the restive city of Homs on Monday and troops pushed back dissident troops from some suburbs on the outskirts of Damascus in an offensive trying to regain control of the capital's eastern doorstep, activists said.

President Bashar Assad's regime is intensifying its assault aimed at crushing army defectors and protesters, even as the West tries to overcome Russian opposition and win a new U.N. resolution demanding a halt to Syria's crackdown on the 10-month-old uprising. Activists reported at least 28 civilians killed on Monday.

With talks on the resolution due to begin Tuesday, a French official said at least 10 members of the Security Council backed the measure, which includes a U.N. demand that Assad carry out an Arab League peace plan. The plan requires Assad to hand his powers over to his vice president and allow the creation of a unity government within two months. Damascus has rejected the proposal.

A text needs support from nine nations on the 15-member U.N. Security Council to go to a vote. The French official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with departmental rules.

The British and French foreign ministers were heading to New York to push for backing of the measure in Tuesday's U.N. talks.

In London, British Prime Minister David Cameron's office urged Moscow to reconsider its opposition to the measure.

"Russia can no longer explain blocking the U.N. and providing cover for the regime's brutal repression," a spokeswoman for Cameron said, on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Russia insists it won't support any resolution it believes could open the door to an eventual foreign military intervention in Syria, the way an Arab-backed U.N. resolution paved the way for NATO airstrikes in Libya. Instead, the Kremlin said Monday it was trying to put together negotiations in Moscow between Damascus and the opposition.

It said Assad's government has agreed to participate. The opposition has in the past rejected any negotiations unless violence stops, and there was no immediate word whether any of the multiple groups that make up the anti-Assad camp would attend.

The United Nations estimated several weeks ago that more than 5,400 people have been killed in Syria's crackdown since the uprising against Assad's rule began in March. The bloodshed has continued since ? with more than 190 killed in the past five days ? and the U.N. says it has been unable to update the figure.

Regime forces on Monday heavily shelled the central city of Homs, which has been one of the cities at the forefront of the uprising, activists said. Heavy machine gun fire hit the city's restive Baba Amr district.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory reported that 14 were killed in the city on Monday. Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the number at 15. Both also reported the discovery of a family of six ? a couple and their four children ? who had been killed by gunfire several days earlier in the city's Karm el-Zeitoun district.

The past three days, pro-Assad forces have been fighting to take back a string of suburbs on the eastern approach to Damascus where army defectors who joined the opposition had seized control.

Government troops managed on Sunday evening to take control of two of the districts closest to Damascus, Ein Tarma and Kfar Batna, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the London-based head of the Observatory.

On Monday, the regime forces were trying to take the next suburbs farther out, with heavy fighting in the districts of Saqba and Arbeen, he said.

At least five civilians were killed in the fighting near Damascus, the Observatory and LCC said. The Observatory also reported 10 army defectors and eight regime troops or security forces killed around the country.

The reports could not be independently confirmed. Syrian authorities keep tight control on the media and have banned many foreign journalists from entering the country.

The wide-scale offensive near the capital suggested the regime is worried that military defectors could close in on Damascus, which has remained relatively quiet while most other Syrian cities have slipped into chaos since the uprising began in March.

The violence has gradually approached the capital. In the past two weeks, army dissidents have become more visible, seizing several suburbs on the eastern edge of Damascus and setting up checkpoints where masked men wearing military attire and wielding assault rifles stop motorists and protect anti-regime protests.

Their presence so close to the capital is astonishing in tightly controlled Syria and suggests the Assad regime may either be losing control or setting up a trap for the fighters before going on the offensive.

State media reported that an "armed terrorist group" blew up a gas pipeline at dawn Monday. The pipeline carries gas from the central province of Homs to an area near the border with Lebanon. SANA news agency reported that the blast happened in Tal Hosh, which is about five miles (eight kilometers) from Talkalakh, along the border with Lebanon.

Further details were not immediately available.

There have been several pipeline attacks since the Syrian uprising began, but it is not clear who is behind them.

Assad's regime has blamed "terrorists" for driving the country's uprising, not protesters seeking democratic change.
