BASKETBALL: Mexico High School Lady Bulldogs opened their basketball season Monday with a win against the New Haven Shamrocks 29-22 in the Montgomery County R-2 Tournament.
"It looked like a first game shooting-wise with both teams playing very solid defense," stated MHS coach Ed Costley. New Haven coming off a final four finish last year, did a great job of slowing the game down on the offensive side keeping the Lady Bulldogs from an uptempo game. Costly said he was impressed with his team's defense. "We held New Haven scoreless the last five minutes of the ball game," he added. Anne Baker, 4 rebounds, and Danielle Baumgartner, 5 rebounds, led the way on the defensive boards.
The Lady Bulldogs will have to improve from three-point range, not making a three-point basket from 11 attempts Monday. "We definitely will need a better three-point night tomorrow (Wednesday) against Hermann to help open the floor for our offense," said the MHS coach.
Mexico shot 24 percent from the floor while New Haven shot 30 percent.
Leading scorers for Mexico were seniors Brooke Costley and Anne Baker with 8 points each. Junior Remington Greenwell contributed 7 points, while junior Kelli Ingrum scored 4 and sophomore Alison Mudd scored 2 points. Costley also led in assists with three, as well as six steals.
The Bulldogs return to tournament play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Hermann.
The seventh grade Mexico Bulldogs opened up their season in winning fashion, overcoming a first quarter deficit to beat the Kirksville Tigers 35-27.
After being down 10-7 after the first quarter, the Bulldogs were tied 14-14 at the half and led 23-18 after three quarters.
Leading the way were Avion Williams with 11 points and Michael White with 10. Also contributing were Cameron Holman with 4 points, Ty DeBurns, Cameron Baumgartner, Marcus Higbee, Malik Sheets and J'Marquay McGrueder, all with 2 points each.
"We came out slow, but our defense really stepped up in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away," Coach Aaron Schafer said.
The Bulldogs' next game will be Thursday in Warrenton at 6:30 p.m.
St. Brendan Irish basketball team earned its first win of the season Monday night against Mary Immaculate of Kirksville to start the St. Pius X Basketball Tournament in Moberly.
"Jeffrey Burgus and Andrew Whitworth had a great game in the paint," stated coach Chris Abbott.
The Irish scored many points from fast breaks and off of their press. Brice Abbott and Brennan MacIntosh disrupted Mary Immaculate's guards forcing many turnovers. Cooper Manns, Parker Koontz, and Mathew Shipman controlled the boards for the Irish. "We have been getting better and better as the season continues," stated the coach.
Burgus scored 22 points with 11 rebounds; Whitworth scored 15 with 7 rebounds, Abbott scored 6 with 5 rebounds; Manns scored 4 points with 6 rebounds and Shipman had 2 points with 2 rebounds. Koontz had 2 rebounds.
The Irish (1-6) play at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Moberly against the winner of St. Pius X and St. Joseph (Martinsburg) game.
MEXICO FRESHMEN TOURNAMENT: North Callaway freshmen basketball boys lost in the first round of the Mexico freshmen tournament Monday night 56-12 to the top seeded team West Junior from Columbia. The score at halftime was 40-10.
Manzell Payne scored half of North Callaway's points with 6.
The Thunderbirds are back in action in the tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m. and will play Helias.
Other scores Monday night included: Oakland 51, Hannibal 33; Helias 57, Moberly 22; and Fulton 57, Mexico 53.
MEXICO 8TH GRADE GIRLS: Mexico Middle School Lady Bulldogs played Boonville in pool play Monday in the Centralia Tournament, losing to the Lady Pirates 32-17.
Kronesha Belcher scored 4 points with 10 rebounds, Makenzie Ress had 4P/3R, Sydny Hull had 4P/2S/3R, Amber Shaw and Taylor Brown each had 2 points, and Anna Proctor scored 1P.
"We had a couple of spurts where we let Boonville's press get to us but overall I thought that we made some improvements especially on defense from our season opening loss at Kirksville," said coach Cindy Allison.
Boonville led in all quarters.
The next game for Mexico will be tonight against West Junior in pool play of the Centralia Tournament.
VAN-FAR: The Van-Far Lady Indians lost 51-18 to Mark Twain last Tuesday.
"The score was not good but I saw good things as a coach," stated Van-Far coach Sarah Asbury. "First, the girls played with heart which is something we have been working on," stated the coach. She added the girls stayed focused and positive as a team.
"There were a lot of reasons in which we lost our first game however, our nerves got the best of us especially in the first half which I attribute to having such a young team."
For Van-Far Ciara Craven reached double figures with 11 points; Brenna Strange scored 4, Renee Nelson, 2, and Brooke Johnson, 1.
NE ALL-DISTRICT FOOTBALL: Several Ledgerland football players have been named to the Northeast All-District team.

MEXICO: Tyler Bracht, sophomore, first team receiver/tight end.
Class 2
VAN-FAR/COMMUNITY R-6: Brian Kurz, second team offensive lineman; and Ethan Gooch, senior, first team defensive back.
Class 1
PARIS: Slater Stone, junior, second team receiver; and Steven Hayhurst, senior, second team all purpose player.
